How to talk to your doctor about treatment options
Having open, honest conversations with your healthcare team is an important part of your cancer journey. Being prepared for appointments can help you get the most out of your time with your doctor.
Consider:
Bringing a family member or friend with you to help take notes
Asking about the goals of treatment and what to expect
Discussing any concerns about side effects or quality of life
What should I consider when discussing treatment options?
Choosing a treatment is one of the most important decisions you'll make. Every person's situation is different, and what matters most to you should guide the conversation with your care team.
As you discuss treatment options with your doctor, think about:
- My values What matters most to me right now, and how does this treatment align with my priorities?
- Treatment goals What is the purpose of this treatment—shrinking the cancer, controlling growth, or managing symptoms?
- Treatment plan What kinds of treatment will I get and when? Are there different phases to this treatment?
- Schedule and logistics How often will I need treatment? Where will I go? Will I need help with transportation?
- Side effects What side effects should I expect and how can they be managed?
- Quality of life How will treatment affect my energy, daily activities, and time with loved ones?
- Financial impact What will this cost, and are there assistance programs available?
- Support services What other care—nutrition, physical therapy, mental health—is available to me?
Learn about support services that can help - Alternatives Are there other treatments or clinical trials I should consider?
