Creating a
Support Network

There's nothing small about facing small cell lung cancer (SCLC)—and there's nothing small about the support your family and friends can provide. Leaning on the people around you can make a real difference during treatment.

How to find support from friends, family, and your community

You don't have to face SCLC alone. Reaching out to the people around you can make a real difference during treatment. Friends and family often want to help but don't know how—giving them a way to contribute can strengthen your relationships. Accepting support isn't a sign of weakness; it's a way to conserve your energy for what matters most.

Here are some ways to build your support network:

Communicating your needs

  • Let people know exactly how they can help—meals, rides, errands, or simply company
  • It's okay to say "yes" when people offer to help, even if it feels hard to accept
  • Designate a trusted friend or family member to share updates with so that you're not fielding calls and messages constantly

Staying organized

  • Online tools can help you coordinate support from your community. Some options include CaringBridge, Lotsa Helping Hands, Meal Train, SupportNow, and Give InKind
  • A shared calendar for appointments can let friends and family easily know when you might need a ride or a check-in
  • Create a list of tasks others can take on—grocery runs, pet care, household chores

Finding community

  • Consider joining a support group—online or in person. Connecting with others who truly understand what you're going through can help you feel less alone during the hardest moments
  • Reach out to lung cancer organizations. These communities exist because no one should have to navigate lung cancer by themselves. They offer resources, peer support, and connection when you need it most
  • Lean on your faith community, coworkers, or neighbors. The people already in your life often want to help—they just need to know that you're open to it. Practical support and emotional connection can come from unexpected places
